刘洋在处理国际商业争议方面具有丰富经验，主要包括国际货物买卖和贸易以及大宗商品、能源和离岸工程、建设工程、航运和造船、股东及股权相关纠纷、国际投资、商业欺诈、监管调查、国际制裁、执行国际判决和仲裁裁决等领域。他时常代表金融机构、保险公司、跨国企业、非政府机构、中国国有企业及大型航运和贸易公司处理在香港及英国法院和国际仲裁庭的复杂商业纠纷。

Qualified as a solicitor in Hong Kong and England and Wales, and as a lawyer of the People’s Republic of China, Edward Liu is a leading lawyer in commercial dispute resolution who has substantial experience in international arbitration and commercial litigation.  The legal directories praise Edward as “exceptional” for his “effective depth of knowledge and strategic thinking”, particularly in the context of assisting entities in Greater China to resolve disputes through international arbitration and litigation (Legal 500 2022).  He is described as a “very approachable” lawyer and noted as “a future star in the Hong Kong legal landscape” (Chambers & Partners 2022).

Liu has extensive experience in advising on and handling international commercial disputes covering areas such as the sale of goods, trade and commodities, energy and offshore projects, construction, shipping and shipbuilding, shareholder and equity-related disputes, international investment, commercial fraud, regulatory investigations, international sanctions, worldwide enforcement of judgments and arbitration awards.  He frequently represents financial institutions, insurance companies, multinational corporations, non-government organisations, Chinese state-owned enterprises as well as major shipping and commodities companies in complex commercial cross border disputes in courts in Hong Kong, London and before international tribunals.

Liu is a Fellow of the Chartered Institute of Arbitration (CIArb), a listed arbitrator of the Hong Kong International Arbitration Centre (HKIAC), a supporting member of the London Maritime Arbitrators’ Association (LMAA), a member of the Hong Kong Maritime Arbitration Group (HKMAG), an arbitrator of the China Maritime Arbitration Commission (CMAC), an arbitrator of the Shenzhen Court of International Arbitration, and an arbitrator of eBRAM.  Since 2018, Edward has accepted many appointments as arbitrator and has been appointed as an arbitrator by the HKIAC, including as a sole arbitrator, on many occasions.
